GVF and its organising partners AITEC Africa and UK Event Management Partners have announced that a satellite conference dedicated to the deployment of satellite and satellite hybrid-based communications solutions in the region of West Africa.

High-level official endorsement of NewCom WAFSAT has been confirmed from the West African Telecommunication Regulators Assembly (WATRA) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

NewCom WAFSAT will feature a highly detailed and focused programme designed to examine mission critical issues in the global satellite telecommunications product and service marketplace as they impact the deployment of satellite and satellite hybrid-based communications solutions across the West Africa region, together with key trends in the policy and regulatory arena within individual national administrations, and across the administrations which collaborate and coordinate within WATRA.

Conference sessions over the two days will include a Regulators’ Roundtable; an examination of liberalisation of satellite service markets; analysis of the voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over satellite application; an evaluation of the satellite communications marketplace in terms of service profitability and state-of-the-art technologies; appraisal of the application of satellite communications to the connectivity needs of the public and private sectors. Speakers will also be asked to address the all important question of the moment: Does broadband satellite make sense for West Africa?

The further objectives of the conference include detailed exploration of the application of satellite-based solutions to meet the communications needs of a range of commercial vertical markets, including the Oil & Gas sector, as well as those of the development sector.

The two-day conference 23-24 November will be followed on 25 November by a number of training course(s)/workshop(s) on the practical implementation of satellite technologies and strategies (see link below).

THE NEWCOM BRAND

The NewCom branded series of conference and exhibition events are jointly devised and organised by the Global VSAT Forum (GVF), AITEC Africa, and UK Event Management Partners (uk-emp), who share control and ownership of all associated intellectual property rights.

NewCom is an abbreviation for New Communications, and refers to new communications technologies and strategies to bridge the digital divide. These technologies and strategies originate from and with the global satellite communications industry, together with other sectors of the world of telecommunications which contribute to the development and deployment of communications solutions based on satellite-terrestrial hybrid technology platforms.

The first NewCom conference and exhibition event - NewCom Africa - took place in London in March 2005. It sought to highlight a wide range of communications solutions with one important trait in common: The potential to improve the fortunes of people and organisations throughout Africa. From business and residential networks to vital applications such as distance learning, telemedicine and rural communications, state-of-the-art ICTs have never held more promise.

But potential and promises are not enough. Funding must be secured; regulation and policy need to be optimised; and "sustainable" solutions must be crafted that draw upon the respective competences of numerous "stakeholders". Likewise, the most appropriate technologies must be identified - whether they are fibre or wireless, fixed or mobile or, as noted above, hybrid approaches.

The purpose of the NewCom Africa series of conference and exhibition events is to act as a catalyst in this process, to provide key private- and public-sector players with an opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and develop plans that transform tremendous potential into practical implementation. Whether your organisation is a service or system provider, a regulator or a ministry, or an end-user, the joint organisers of the NewCom Africa series are honoured to facilitate you participation in this important ongoing endeavour.
